The OPRF gymnastics team finished second at the Sandburg Regional last week, advancing several gymnasts to the Hinsdale Central Sectional that took place last night (after deadline).
Automatic advancers included M.G. Senseng, who placed second (9.15) on the bars and third in the all-around (34.675); Catherine Malin, who took second in the floor exercise (8.9) and fourth on the vault (8.925); Kaci Cunningham, who placed fourth in the floor exercise (8.7), fourth in the all-around (34.125) and fifth on the beam (8.725); Christine Weidman, who placed fifth on the vault (8.85); and Nicki Johnson, who placed fourth on the bars (8.4).
The Huskies garnered a total score of 136.8, while Sandburg won the regional with a 142.275.
OPRF girls fall to Downers N.
The OPRF girls basketball team’s West Suburban (Silver) Conference schedule came to a close on Friday with a 49-47 loss to Downers Grove North.
The Huskies (18-10, 8-4) were led by Clare O’Connor’s 13 points.
On Jan. 31, OPRF downed Rolling Meadows at the Fenton tournament. Kendal Dirkin led the Huskies with 12 points and nine rebounds. O’Connor added seven points.
OPRF closed out the regular season last night against Leyden (after deadline). The third seeded Huskies host either Curie or Austin on Monday (6 p.m.) in Game 3 of the Oak Park Regional. The title game will be played on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
Friars prevail in Philly
The second-ranked Fenwick girls basketball trounced Springside High School (Pa.) 73-24 in Philadelphia on Saturday.
Devereaux Peters led the Friars (25-1) with a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds. Alison Jackson added 10 points in the onslaught.
Before leaving for Philadelphia, the Friars dismantled East Suburban Catholic Conference foe Carmel 36-19 to push their record to 6-0. Peters led with nine points, while Jackson and Erin Power each scored six apiece.
Fenwick travels to Marian Catholic (8-0) on Saturday (2:30 p.m.) for a chance to win its 13th consecutive conference title. The Friars, seeded No. 1 in the Riverside Sectional, play either Elmwood Park or Argo in Game 2 of the Hillside Regional at Proviso West on Feb. 14 (6 p.m.).
Huskies splash to fifth
The OPRF swim team placed fifth at the West Suburban (Silver) Conference Meet held at Downers Grove North on Saturday.
The Huskies garnered 146.5 points with the help of diver Phil Meyer, who took first with 319 points. OPRF’s Jimmy Kiel finished fourth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:07.56. Tim Matthew finished sixth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:12.62.
The Huskies compete in the Fenwick Sectional on Feb. 17 (Diving at 9 a.m., swimming at 1 p.m.).
