Cloudy skies and even torrential rain didn’t deter 400 visitors from enjoying “Upstairs, Downstairs at the Historic Hales Mansion,” on Sept. 23, a housewalk that benefitted the Historical Society of Oak Park & River Forest.
Everyone seemed to especially enjoy the stories of life in turn-of-the-century Oak Park as related by “Mr. and Mrs. Burton Hales” and their daughter “Laura” and their cook, maid, butler and chauffeur.
Special thanks are due the wonderful actors who portrayed these individuals and to Doug Deuchler, who wrote their scripts. The actors included John Rice, Nancy Greco, Ellen Lipo, John Roeder, Mercita DeMuynck, Lynn Nosek and Brett Epich. We are also indebted to the many volunteers who sold tickets, welcomed visitors and staffed the house.
We are especially grateful to Dr. Leah Urbanosky for her generosity in opening her magnificent home, Marcee Gavula and Gary Mancuso of Baird & Warner for their help and cooperation, and Wilfried Werner, whose beautifully restored 1928 Packard Sedan was a major attraction.
Without the help of all these individuals we could not continue to fulfill our mission of collecting, preserving and exhibiting the history of both communities.
