Huskies get angry, edge York
The OPRF golf team came from behind last week to edge York 161-162, securing its best score of the season.
Coming off a disappointing 164-174 loss to Downers Grove North, the Huskies (2-5, 2-3 WSC) tightened up their play. Clayton Young led OPRF with a 38, while Connor Roche and Dan Kowalczyk both shot 40s, and Matt Linder finished with a 43.
“We lost by 10 [to Downers North] but there was an improvement in the attitudes of some of the kids that was encouraging,” said OPRF coach John Gann. “They were getting angry at losing, but more importantly losing without having gained any respect from the other team by their play or competitiveness. They are beginning to look for answers and spend the time it takes practicing the skills to improve their weaknesses.”
OPRF’s scores against York were a vast improvement from the Downers North match. Against the Mustangs, Ben Brown shot the Huskies’ best score with a 42. Kowalczyk scored a 43, while Young finished with a 44. Roche closed out the match with a 45.
“We have a great chance to get out of our regional if we can repeat this type of effort,” said Gann.
The Huskies take on Lyons Township Saturday, followed by the West Suburban (Silver) Conference Meet on Sept. 26.
OPRF volleyball digs in
The OPRF volleyball pushed its overall record to 10-4 last week by sweeping past Proviso West 25-7, 25-15. The victory also kept the Huskies perfect in the West Suburban (Silver) Conference at two games.
OPRF also downed Leyden in non-conference action 25-12, 25-12 last week.
Olivia Wilkes led the Huskies with an ace, three kills, 17 assists, five digs, and a block.
Maranda Herner added 13 digs for OPRF.
The Huskies travel to Nazareth Friday (7 p.m.).
