A recent Wednesday Journal online poll asked, “Do you consider Oak Park a bicycle friendly community?” When I last checked, 44% say no. As a cyclist and a driver, I think the problem, from what I can see, is the bicyclists. Either out of ignorance or arrogance, most adult cyclists do not obey traffic regulations when riding on village streets. In case the readers don’t know, under the Illinois Traffic Code, bicyclists riding on Illinois roadways are required to obey all the same traffic rules as if they were a motor vehicle. This includes stop signs, traffic lights, yield signs, and even one way streets and speed limits. At a stop sign near my home on a recent Sunday morning, I counted 16 adult cyclists running the stop sign in a 30-minute period.
