Oak Park police arrested a fleeing armed robbery suspect at the East Avenue Blue Line station Wednesday afternoon after the car he was driving lost a tire on the Eisenhower Expressway.
Parolee Kevin R. Brooks, 31, of Bellwood and another man had allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint in the 4800 block of Adams Street in the Austin neighborhood around 1:45 p.m. Brook’s alleged accomplice was arrested by Chicago police near the scene. Brooks fled west on the Eisenhower Expressway.
Two Oak Park tactical officers had been monitoring the Chicago radio traffic, and were sitting on the East Avenue bridge as Brook’s car lost a tire as he approached the bridge. The officers watched as Brooks exited his car, ran across the westbound lanes of the expressway, scaled a fence and the CTA tracks, and climbed onto the elevated platform. They then reportedly observed Brooks place something in a receptacle on the platform and walk away. The officers recovered what they believe are the proceeds of the robbery from the vending box, approximately $150, then arrested Brooks.
A subsequent search of Brook’s car turned up a .38 caliber look-alike pellet gun allegedly used in the armed robbery.
