Oak Park and River Forest’s impressive run at the Class AA Dual Team State championship ended on Saturday when the Huskies fell to Grant 39-13 in the quarterfinals at Northern Illinois University.

The Huskies were outmatched against Grant, as the team from Fox Lake won the first seven matches. John Davis, Pete Kowalczuk and Ellis Coleman managed victories for OPRF. Davis won the 215-weight class with an 8-5 decision over Grant’s Lee Hernandez. Kowalczuk forced a fall on Nicoy Tathum at 1:42 to win at heavyweight. Coleman forced a fall on Danny Diegio to win the 103-pound weight class.

The Huskies advanced to the State tournament after defeating Lake Park 39-28 and New Trier 37-27 to win the Oak Park Sectional championship held at OPRF High School on Feb. 21.

OPRF is expected to return four of the five wrestlers that competed in the Class AA State Individual tournament. Ellis Coleman, who wrestled at 103 pounds this season, will be a sophomore next year. His older brother, Lilishawn (112-pound weight class) will be a junior.

Also expected back are Weldon Rogers (140), Kowalczuk (275) and Brad Bolen (125), who was ineligible for the bulk of this season.
