Some sad post-Katrina facts concerning pets: Shelters from Mississippi to Wisconsin, from Florida to Colorado, are full beyond capacity with Katrina animals, and hundreds are being euthanized daily. In addition, local animals needing homes cannot be accepted in these shelters because of the lack of space. Cannot the village board consider placing a one-year hiatus on the three-dog limit and other pet restrictions so that the hundreds of compassionate animal welfare advocates in Oak Park can provide temporary foster homes for Katrina animals and local strays until the Katrina animals are reunited with their owners or adopted and the emergency subsides?
