The City of Peoria, Arizona was established in the 1880s with a vision of farm lands fed by water from the Salt River, according to the city’s web site. William J. Murphy, with the completion of the Arizona Canal in 1885, went back east to interest people in settling the new community. He found takers in Peoria, Ill.”four families from there were among the first to move to Arizona to occupy and work their land, and presumably to name the town.
When it was incorporated in 1954, Peoria covered one square mile of land. A few annexations later, it now covers 178 square miles and is the ninth largest city in Arizona.
Swenson describes Peoria as more suburban than Oak Park. Below is further information to compare and contrast the two burgs.
