I really enjoyed reading Terry Dean’s article, “Going Beyond the Classroom,” in the Sept. 28 Wednesday Journal?#34;the story of OPRF students’ educational and service-oriented travel to Tanzania.
What the article did not note was that this experience was made possible by the school’s partnership with Global Explorers, a non-profit organization with Oak Park roots. Global Explorers’ board president, Tom Lillig, and executive director, David Shurna, are graduates of Emerson Junior High School. David, also an alumnus of OPRF, accompanied and guided the group in Tanzania last summer.
Global Explorers, based in Colorado, provides science and leadership curriculum and international travel for middle school and high school students and teachers to locations in Canada, Africa, Mexico, and Peru. Readers can find out more about Global Explorers and read an OPRF student’s expanded description of her Tanzania experience at the website www.globalexplorers.org; click on Tanzania.
