Windmills 14U win entry to two national tourneys
“Hot,” described the weather and the performance of the Windmills Red team on the last weekend of June at the ASA (Amateur Softball Association) Girls’ Class A 14-Under Fast Pitch tournament in Horicon, Wis. The competition included 24 teams from around Wisconsin and Illinois, and included a year-round California team who gave up only two runs during the tournament”both to the Windmills, who collectively steamrolled their opponents to the championship game where they faced the Sparks of Orland Park. The Sunday night finale was called due to lightning and ASA rules allowed both teams a bid to the national tournament, to be held in Owensboro, Kent., next month.
The 4th of July weekend brought the Windmills to Rockford for an AFA (American Fastpitch Association) tournament, where they took all but one game and earned their bid to the AFA nationals to be held during the last week of July.
This years 14U Red team is coached by University of Wisconsin pitcher Meghan Smith and veteran Windmills coach Bob Dillon.
