With four recent area graduates pursuing pro baseball dreams, each week throughout the summer Wednesday Journal will be keeping readers informed of their progress. Stats are through Sunday.

Justin Olson had a rough outing at Norwich on July 5, yielding five runs?#34;on five walks and just two hits?#34;in 2 2/3 innings. He got things together in his next outing, tossing a scoreless inning Friday night in New Britain’s loss at Bowie to lower his ERA to 4.71. The Journal caught up with Olson during the road trip to Bowie, Md., over the weekend. Look for a story about the Twins prospect in next week’s paper.

Giants farmhand Mike Santoro got his first professional RBIs Saturday when he hit a two-run double in Salem-Keizer’s loss to Everett. Santoro went 2-for-5 on the week to raise his average to .176 in 17 at-bats.

Vasili Spanos got four more RBIs last week, giving him 15 in 15 games with Double A Midland. He’s hitting .273 with the RockHounds and a combined .307 when you factor in his stats from earlier this season with Single A Stockton.

Blake Whealy went hitless in 12 at-bats as the DH last week, striking out nine times. His average dropped to .232. Whealy’s team, the St. Lucie Mets, is 9-7 in the second half of the season, good for second place in the Florida State League’s East Division.
