With four recent OPRF graduates pursuing pro baseball dreams, each week WEDNESDAY JOURNAL will be keeping readers informed of their progress. Stats are through Sunday.
Storms swept through Florida last week and rained out all but three of Blake Whealy’s games for St. Lucie. Whealy saw action on Sunday, going 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in the Mets’ win over Palm Beach. He’s hitting .247 with four homers in 46 games.
New Britain’s Justin Olson allowed only one earned run in two appearances spanning seven innings last week. He moved his record to 4-6 when he earned a win Sunday with two scoreless innings of relief against Portland. In his previous outing, a June 1 start at Norwich, Olson lost because two infield errors let three unearned runs score against him. Olson has a 4.77 ERA and has received decisions in 10 of his 12 appearances.
Vasili Spanos hit his sixth homer Sunday to cap a week in which he batted .345 (10-for-29) for Single-A Stockton of the California League. Spanos scored six runs and had four RBIs as he raised his average to .296. He’s played in 22 consecutive games.
Freshman outfielder Ruairi O’Connor got his first taste of the NCAA playoffs Sunday when he pinch ran in the ninth inning of Florida State’s regional-clinching win over Auburn. The Seminoles went 3-0 in the double-elimination Tallahassee Regional to advance to the Super-Regional for the seventh consecutive year. FSU will face Florida this weekend in Gainesville, Fla.
