The third time didn’t turn out to be a charm for the Oak Park and River Forest soccer team when the Huskies took on West Suburban (Silver) Conference foe Lyons Township in the Oak Park Sectional title game on May 31. The Huskies fell 3-1 as Lyons took home its third straight sectional title, each coming from wins over OPRF.

In front of a large home crowd, the Huskies were unable to recover from an early 2-0 deficit. Lyons’ Anne McElherne scored both goals with help from Katie Rehor and Emily Rucker. Jackie Hanson knocked in an insurance goal for the Lions (18-8), before junior Hali Schwartz thwarted a shutout by finding net for the Huskies with just over 15 minutes to play in the game.

OPRF edged Lyons 1-0 back in early April, and, along with Hinsdale Central, shared the WSC title with the Lions.

The Huskies battled through an injury-laden season with a record of 17-5-1. Ana Pappageorge, the team’s leading scorer (eight goals), missed several games due to an MCL strain. The team’s assist leader, Bridget Gallogly, was forced to miss the postseason after a leg injury in the final game of the regular season. The four-year varsity player suffered a torn ACL in OPRF’s 2-0 shutout of York on May 17.

The team graduates four seniors in Emily Steffen, Gallogly, Amanda Velasquez and goalkeeper M.G. Huth, who helped the Huskies to 12 shutouts this season and tallied 14 saves in the win over Lyons back in April.
