Quelling speculation he might want to be considered for the open trustee seat on the Oak Park village board, Mas Takiguchi last week took himself out of the running. He was defeated for a trustee post in early April while running on the VMA slate.
Two years ago he was defeated in his bid on an independent slate.
Meanwhile, President-elect David Pope, who created the situation by winning the top spot with two years left on his trustee seat, said Monday that steady progress toward a replacement is being made. He is meeting with new and continuing trustees and asking for both “skills and capabilities” they’d like to see in a new trustee as well as specific names. He says he has also “reached out” to the NLP and the VMA for “their perspective” on the opening.
OPRF special ed parents to speak out
Parents of students with special needs at Oak Park and River Forest High School plan to tell to the Board of Education at its Thursday night meeting of alleged abuse of students in the TEAM (Transitional Education with Access to the Mainstream) program.
Two parents’ letters appear in this edition’s VIEWPOINTS outlining what they see as continuing problems at the high school. Parents say they have addressed their concerns to administrators, who have not acted.

D97 schools won’t be morgues
District 97 signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the village and Medical Reserve Corps so that its facilities might be used in case of natural disaster, disease outbreak or bioterrorism event.
The schools would not likely be used as a makeshift morgue, as morbidly suggested for the Ridgeland Commons ice rink.
No word on whether zombies could penetrate schools in a post-apocalyptic world.
Correct that
In our April 13 piece on developments in the River Forest police lawsuit, Bill Dwyer wrote that village attorney John Gilbert “did not return repeated calls.” That was an inaccurate characterization.
Five calls were made to Gilbert’s office seeking comment, however the line was busy each time. Gilbert has made it clear that he always returns phone calls when he knows of them.
