Recently, in the comprehensive article entitled “Library board race offers a range of personalities” candidates for the Oak Park Library Board were profiled. I was unable to be reached for comment, and in seeking my first elected public office position, I would like to share with you, the residents of Oak Park, my reasons for seeking a seat on the Oak Park Library Board.

I have for over the past 10 years, as a resident of Oak Park, been an avid user of the Oak Park Library facility and resources. Many times I have come to depend on those resources. I strongly believe that an average Oak Park citizen, who has been active in the Oak Park community, who personally appreciates the value of the public library to a community, is the necessary choice for Library Board representative.

I have been active throughout the Oak Park community and surrounding Chicago area: I am currently serving on the Oak Park Community Relations Commission, where we work to uphold diversity values in Oak Park. My work on the commission has involved the Oak Park 4th of July Parade and helping to serve the young people and their parents through the CRC Middle School awards ceremony. Prior to the Community Relations Commission I served on the steering committee for the Women’s Business Development Center in Chicago. I currently serve on the Austin Gardens’ Board of Directors, and my career in property management has provided me the background in facilities management and fiduciary responsibility necessary for the position of an Oak Park Library Board Member.

I will bring to the library board the passion, hard work, creativity and charisma that have been a part of my work in these organizations. Moreover, I will bring my experience as a patron and dependent of library services.

I am fortunate to live in a community such as Oak Park; we put a high value on literacy, lifelong learning and open access. This is a wonderful community with a library that serves the diverse population in our village. It would be my privilege to enrich the experiences that people currently have at the library by serving its constituents.

Please feel free to contact me at (708) 445-1865 and thank you for your vote of confidence.

Dee Leonard
Candidate for OP Library Board
