The Brooks 8th grade girls’ basketball team defeated Ascension 24-19 to take first place at the Tony Trofimuk Memorial tournament on Nov. 13th.
Ascension got off to a slow start, trailing Brooks 15-6 at the half. However, a solid third quarter cut Brooks’ lead to three. Brooks then responded with a strong defensive effort, allowing them to hold onto their lead and win the title.
Gabriell Cole led Brooks with nine points. Morgan Williams chipped in seven.
Emma Cullen (7 points) and Sarah Shannon (6 points) provided the scoring punch for Ascension.
In the third place game, Casey Blaha scored 13 points as Roosevelt defeated Grace-Lutheran 34-5. Julian defeated St. Bernadine 27-4 in the consolation bracket, with Lizzie Lehman and Brittany Smith each scoring seven points for Julian.
Athletes selected for the All-tournament Team were: Asia Babbington, Blaha, Cullen, Canika Davis, Lauren Gonzalez, Rachel Huck, Maggie Paoli, Shannon, Emma Schmidt-Swartz, Brittany Smith, Megan White, Morgan Williams, and Samantha Zitzer.
D’backs win big
The Diamondbacks won this year’s girls T-ball village championship. They also finished first last year and were second the year before.
The team went 15-0 in the regular season and 20-0 overall. They played the Royals in the championship and beat them 13-10 and 16-7. (The Royals ended the season with a 16-4 record).
In the championship series, the Diamondbacks held the Royals to two runs or less in six of the nine innings they played. The Diamondbacks also had solid hitting. They scored four or more runs in five of the nine innings.
