Discover the Unusual

"It's a treasure trove!"
– Historic Renovation Department, Art Institute of Chicago
Renovating an old house? Journey through Chicago architectural history at Jan's Antiques in Chicago's Historic Fulton Market District. Jan's is one of Chicago's largest collection of one-of-a-kind salvaged architectural artifacts—anything you'd find in a house from the 1880s to the 1950s. It's been called a "rehabber's heaven" for collectors, artists, designers and contractors. In the 18,000 square foot showroom you'll find vintage hardware, more than 2,000 old doors, architectural carved stone and terra cotta, ornate mirrors, bathroom fixtures, fireplace mantels and surrounds, garden statuary and vintage ornate iron.
Since 1971, Jan's been recycling the salvaged treasures of Chicago's great homes. Missing period doorknobs? Looking for a mortise lock? Need period hinges, balusters, newel posts, tiles, trim, heating register plates? Looking for a matching bullseye molding? Period light fixtures? Antique picture frames? Pocket doors? Cabinet knobs? Drawer pulls? Jan's got 'em. Just give yourself time to browse.
"Most people spend three hours in here, just to get a grip on the place," says owner Jan Seymour.
A lover of old homes, Seymour got her start selling high-end new bathroom fixtures. Her customers remodeling vintage homes began to beg her for older toilets, telling her, "a modern toilet doesn't look right." Meanwhile, "all of these beautiful Chicago mansions were being torn down." Seeing a business opportunity, she bought a truckful of construction salvage from a beautiful old home being demolished -- and sold it in a month. She's never looked back.
"People can go to Home Depot and buy a door or they can come here. Once they're stripped these doors are quarter-sawn oak or maple, and it's 200-300 year old wood."
Jan's breathtaking inventory has helped to create the vintage look of Chicago restaurants like Tutto Bene, La Luce, Beaujolais, Ballydoyles, Potbellys and Trattoria Isabella. Jan's has furnished authentic props and backdrops for more than 30 period movies, including The Untouchables, Barbershop, High Fidelity, Road to Perdition and Dillinger.
Jan's also sells antique furniture, pie chests, desks, hall trees, safes, clocks, china, silver, radios, phonographs, records, and one-of-a-kind decorative items.
