"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening." ~Coco Chanel
Sometimes while out and about town I spot a wonderfully stylish woman and I have to ask her how she does it.
I wonder to myself is it innate or is it learned? Because once in a while I'll hold up a belt, and well, I just don't know.
I always pose the question to these stylish women: Who is your style inspiration?
Most assume that I have a firm handle on all things fashion, but the truth is, just as an artist looks to the world for inspiration, so I look to my surroundings for style stimulus and take careful note, because I appreciate any help I can get.
It can be a little tricky sometimes, this dressing thing.
I’m a creature of habit, and I’m still trying to work through my love of monochromatic apparel. I like a splash of color, but immerse myself in color?
I own color. I like color. I just don’t wear color. (Is it really color if someone has to lean in and ask: Is that blue or black?)
My fashion antennae are always up; I look to my environment and the people and things in it to kindle my creative energy (I may have walked by your garden and fallen in love with two shades of flowers planted side by side or been inspired by the vibrant hues of a Picasso painting at the museum), and I then I interpret it according to what makes me feel comfortable and confident.
I also love asking the shopkeepers at local boutiques: they are a wealth of fashion knowledge! Ask the gals at Filoni and they won’t steer you wrong, inquire of the young ladies at Nora’s Shoe Shop and you won’t be led astray, pick the brain of Sanem at her eponymous women’s boutique and she’ll make it as easy as pie.
The lovely ladies at Deedee & Edee's will put you on the right path, and Heather at Muse will offer insight that you can trust. Our very own Sartorialist, Nick at Chameleon has a fashion aesthetic that will surprise you. Work or play, I know I'm in good hands with so many experts at my disposal.
I don't mind asking for directions when I'm lost, and I don't mind asking for fashion guidance when I'm floundering.
I will also continue to look to you while out and about town.
Here are a few style sites that provide tips for those who are looking for a little nudge in the fashion direction (like yours truly).
www.sanems.com (Local fashionista and retail merchant, Sanem D'Angelo offers fashion how-to's via pics of complete ensembles or video on her website.)
www.secondcitystyle.com (The lovely Elise Ford, daughter of OakPark.com's Empowered Parent blogger has her very own style blog - which I'm crazy about!)
www.thestylerookie.com (Oak Parker, Tavi Gevinson, is a teen sensation with a wonderfully dry sense of humor.)
And then there are always style magazines that offer online nuggets for those of us who are open to guidance.
Truly, the women I see on a daily basis while I'm on my way to work or on the way home from the grocery store inspire me most: those women who juggle work, children, friends, family and yet still manage to look stylish. I’d love to know who inspires your fashion choices and what are your favorite online sites for style inspiration?
