The Art of Layering
We all know the drill. Dress for the weather. But what to do when Mother Nature is so mercurial? She may offer sunshine and blue skies today but gray, blustery days tomorrow. It’s cold one minute, warm the next. The answer: layering.
This week, while out and about in Oak Park, I met Shanon Williams, who seemed to be channeling bygone Hollywood elegance in her cropped cut and onyx scarf. An ebony pencil skirt layered over inky tights, paired with a petal pink blouse and vintage necklaces completed her classic, minimalist look.
The scarf was a practical piece kept on hand to add warmth if needed; it could also be shed easily should temperatures start to rise. The clean, simple lines created a silhouette that was a nod back to the elegance of high-fashion decades.
The best accessory of all could not be found at any retailer near or far: Shanon’s fabulous smile! Find out which local boutiques Shanon frequents to pick up smart fashion attire and create her chic look.
Your fashion style: Classic with a twist.
Favorite fashion era: I’m drawn to the classic refinement of the 1930’s and 1940’s. The red lipstick and short hair: I love the way women presented themselves.
Fashion inspiration: Kathryn Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, and Jackie Onassis. (See photo gallery to view Kate and Audrey Hepburn's timeless looks.)
Favorite local boutiques: Muse, Ananas Boutique and Nora’s Shoe Shop [in Oak Park]. I also look for vintage finds at the Brown Elephant and the Animal Care League. I love to mix an expensive piece with a great vintage find.
Greatest fashion indulgence: Something spectacular!
An item every woman should have in her closet: A white blouse and a black turtleneck. They’re underrated! Women may overlook these pieces because they’re seen as too simple, but you can’t go wrong. They can be dressed up by layering them or dressed down by pairing them with dark jeans and a pair of boots for a casual look.
Stop back next Friday for more Style Inspiration from friends and neighbors or for another Fabulous Find from our local independent retailers. I'll see you around town and in the shops!
