Meet this week's style inspiration: Lauren Metz of Dallas, Texas (my birthplace!). I met Lauren while shopping at one of my local favorites, Careful Peach Boutique.
I’ll admit, I first noticed Lauren a few months back when she had on a beautiful bohemian blouse in ecru paired with dark-wash skinny jeans and cognac colored boots. I definitely noticed a pattern: Lauren had a distinct sense of style and seemed to have an innate sense of fashion. It turns out Lauren is an artist. Lauren traveled north not because she harbored a deep-seated desire to wear puffy coats in the wintertime, but she came to study at the School of the Art Institute, where she majored in painting, drawing, and 16mm film.
So let’s find out how she does it in this week’s Style Inspiration!

Your fashion style: Resourceful, Structural, and Bold
Favorite Fashion Era and Fashion Inspiration: I'm enormously inspired by old television and movies - anything between the 20's and the 60's. I really enjoy watching clothing styles morph from the flamboyant femininity of Gloria Swanson in silent films to Marlene Deitrich's [intrepid style] and later, Katherine Hepburn's masculine, simplified styles. I try to stay up to date with current trends but adore partnering those trends with something from the past. The equestrian legging look right now is a very classic one to me.
Hitchcock's Marni immediately comes to mind and taking cues from Tippi Hedren, I start to assemble an ensemble! (See photo gallery for a peek at Tippi's timeless looks, Hepburn's high style, and Marlene's masculine, yet feminine fashion feat.)
Favorite Local Boutiques: My favorite local clothing shops are Muse, Takara and Shoe Soko on Marion St. and Sanem's on Oak Park Avenue. If you have a good eye and an idea of what you're looking for, La Femmena, the consignment shop on North Boulevard, also has some great finds.
Greatest Fashion Indulgence: I hate to be cliché, but my greatest fashion indulgence would have to be shoes. I seem to have a penchant for buying adorable yet uncomfortable shoes - and a lot of 'em.
Fashion Advice: When you're shopping in one of our local boutiques, don't be afraid to ask for help! Having worked in a women's clothing store I can tell you first hand that more often than not, the staff will be honest with you. For instance, Sanem of Sanem's has an amazing sense of style and not only will she tell you what works for you but she'll give you ten different ways to style whatever article of clothing you're looking at. Muse is also a great place to pick up current style trends and get feedback - and inexpensively!
