Where do you big box?

I was upset with Target this year over the Thanksgiving night shopping hours, so I didn't shop there at all leading up to the holidays.

But with both kids being home on Monday and the refridgerator looking very slim, as well as needing some other key staples i.e. laundry detergent, I buckled. The kids and I were going to Target in Broadview. So with three year old and second grader in tow, we were off to do some ONE STOP shopping.

Why Target?  I could have gone to Kmart I suppose, but the one here has no real grocery section. There isn't a Meijer's close enough to even consider them an option. I can't imagine what the Walmart by us looks like with the recent renovation going on at the same time as Christmas season volume shopping.

I understand that folks have political reasons for shopping or not shopping at Walmart. I don't have political feelings either way for Walmart, but I hate a messy store.

And while I am a huge supporter of local retail and shopping small, I lean toward cost and convenience at times when I have to go shopping with both kids in tow. That kind of shopping pattern, I think makes me quite normal. Overall, I bet I do more local small shopping statistically, than other moms with grade school kids. Overall, I bet, we do more local small shopping in the Oak Park area than others in our demographic groups do nationally.

But I'm curious. Where do OPRF folks go shopping when a big box is necessary?  Do some folks out there never big box? Has the push to shop local made us closet big box shoppers? Are we as a village increasing our on-line purchases with the rest of the nation?

Let me know. Where, or do you big box?

Update: Quite a few folks told me about the Meijer on North Ave. after I wrote the blog. It had never even crossed my radar. So I went...
