Looking for something a little more substantive when buying your powdered doughnuts and tomatoes at the farmers market this Saturday? Then you might like what the Oak Park village board is slinging tomorrow.

Local elected officials will be one of the vendors at the market, which runs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pilgrim Congregational Church parking lot, 460 Lake St. There, residents will have a chance to ask questions, air concerns or gab with local politicians. The farmers' market appearance is part of the village board's efforts to have more face-to-face time with residents outside village hall, according to a village email alert.

I went to the Farmer's market. And I spoke with one of the trustees. And he wrote down my concern - which had to do with a specific repair that is needed to a road. And now we'll see if anything happens.

"Here constituents, have a doughnut and a smiling, friendly conversation while we waste your astronomically high taxes on stupid stuff we don't know how to do. Aren't the doughnuts good? Aren't you fat, dumb, and happy now? No? Well, have another doughnut...if it stops raining, I have a golf date with a developer, consultant or law firm later..."

Thank You to the Village board of OP for interacting with the residents and having a dialogue with your constituents! Democracy in action. OP ROCKS!!!

...I skipped visiting the Farmers' Market today. I was genuinely afraid that I would find myself shouting at the nattering nabobs on the Village Board for their ongoing incompetence and lack of focus on the issues that matter to Oak Park. It's funny that they're serving doughnuts -- the only thing more appropriate would be t-shirts declaring "Let Them Eat Cake" (or "Let Them Watch While We Eat Their Cake"). So much for shopping local this weekend....

OP Rez, I do recall that Ray Johnson recently volunteered as a doughnut maker.

I have an idea. Maybe the village trustees could work one day in the parking office or the cashiers office. This would give them an opportunity to talk with many residents when the come in to pay their fines. They would then really get a feel for the Oak Park experience.

I have an idea: Have the Village Board be the donut makers one week during the market. I know most trustees usually participate with other organizations that they are involved with but this could be fun..
