In a bit of routine school board business, the District 200 Finance Committee on Monday set the day and time for its monthly committee meeting. D200 board committees typically meet during the third week of the month. Their regular board meeting is typically the following week on the forth Thursday of the month. The three-member committee agreed to meet the third Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m. In typical fashion, board members wanted to make sure they, as well as administrators, were able to meet on that day and at that time. But in a completely untypical move, committee Chair Tom Cofsky asked yours truly if that time worked for me to be able to cover. I completely appreciate being asked and said so at that time. I also explained that old adage in the news biz— "My time is everyone else's time," though except on our deadline days.
When the high school board switched to evening committee meetings from the mornings, those sometime conflicted with District 97's regular nightly board meeting, which are on Tuesdays, usually every other week. Of course, when D97 changed their regular meeting days from Wednesdays to Tuesdays a few years back, that kinda screwed up attending D200's Tuesday night committee meetings. But all these meetings don't always happen on the same Tuesday. And that sometimes leads to those wonderful periods for me — unusually in the spring for some reason — where I'm covering a meeting every Tuesday, sometimes for several weeks, including for about a month a couple of springs ago.
My time is everyone else's time.
But without going into all of that background, I noted to Mr. Cofsky that D97 does record its meetings, which are available to the public to listen to, including the local press. So if I have a conflict — or just can't get to a D97 meeting for whatever reason — I pick up a CD from the district. And the high school recently also started giving me a CD recording of its meetings I can't attend.
Still, again, it's nice to be taken into consideration.
