OPRF wrestling coach Mike Powell and his battle with polymyositis, a rare autoimmune disease that attacks muscle cells, was featured in a television segment of Sports Illustrated on the NBC Sports Network that first aired Wednesday night.

Powell, an OPRF grad and former state wrestling champ who coached the Huskies to a Class 3A State Dual Team title in 2009, said during the program that his rapidly deteriorating condition will eventually cause him to lose vital physical capabilities, including walking.

The program will re-air on NBC Sports Network throughout the rest of September.

Thank you for such an inspiring article, and introducing this inspiring coach Mike Powell. Want to send my appreciation to Coach Powell for doing this interview and sharing this hard time in his life. Thank you for bringing awareness to this rare auto immune disease, Polymyositis. We lost one of our daughters to the same rare disease Polymyositis in 2009. Casey was 19, had played soccer all her life just like her sisters. again Sincerely thank you for this inspiring article and awareness.

Coach Powell is an inspiration to us all. I have known this for years and am so happy the world is finding out. He will also be featured in an ESPN show in October and will be honored with the Wrestling Hall of Fame's Medal of Courage. He is such a special person and we are so lucky to have him in our lives and our community.

Hey Brad, I thought you hated combat sports? Or is it just the ones you don't understand?
