Eight college men's tennis teams will compete in the third annual River Forest Collegiate Invitational Tennis Tournament to be hosted by the River Forest Tennis Club in September.
Athletes from Southern Methodist University, UIC-Chicago and NIU, among others, will compete on Sept. 14 and 15. Play will begin on Friday morning at 9 a.m. with an expected two rounds of singles and one round of doubles, and continuing the next day with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles.
"It's a pretty unique event in that very few collegiate matches are played on clay courts, and after the first couple of years running the event we've found that the coaches and players really enjoy it," said John Griffin, River Forest collegiate invitational tournament director. "The main season for collegiate tennis — men and women — is during the spring semester, so during the fall is a good time for them to play invitationals where they can get a chance to play teams they might not normally see."
River Forest Tennis Club, located at 615 Lathrop Ave., will again be the host with additional cooperation from the Oak Park Tennis Center as well as the Oak Park Country Club. Attendance is open to the public and free.
"The caliber of play is very high and gets better as we continue to seek to draw stronger teams," added Griffin.
