The Marshall Field's building, aka the former Border's space at Lake and Harlem in Oak Park has been empty since last year, leaving 26,000 square feet of space vacant in the heart of the retail district.

A medical clinic has indicated interest in securing the space, but zoning prohibits non-retail use on the ground floor unless it's at least 50 feet from any street lines.

The issue has been continued multiple times by Oak Park's Zoning Board of Appeals.

The outside, meanwhile, has been undergoing a facelift for months beneath a bright blue tarp.

Crews have been on the scene for what is said to be basic tuckpointing work and general cleanup to the outside of the building.

No indication has been given as to when the work will be completed.

It's actually a giant wall mural of Pope and Johnson welcoming people to come live, work, shop and invest in The Peoples Republic of Oak Park.
