OPRF track and field star Carl Heinz took his jumping abilities to another stage over the weekend.
Heinz, who will be a senior this fall, finished second in the high jump event at the 2011 New Balance Nationals held at Aggie Stadium at the University of North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. The junior topped out with a leap of 6-feet, 9.75-inches, behind Mississippi’s Justin Fondren, who also leapt 6-9.75. Fondren won the event by having less jump faults than Heinz.
Back in May, Heinz became OPRF’s first track and field state champ in 24 years and first state champ in the high jump event since 1980 when he leapt 6-10 at the Class 3A State Meet.
During his junior season, Heinz set a new school record by clearing 7-feet at a nonconference meet.
