Two losses over the weekend put the OPRF boys basketball team in a tight spot as the Class 4A playoffs get set to begin next week. But the Huskies (10-11) get to settle into their homecourt to close out the regular season against a team they will see again just a few days later when they begin the postseason.
The Huskies fell to Morton 71-65 on Saturday despite a fourth-quarter rally that saw them whittle a 16-point deficit down to two with 22 seconds left. They lost to Glenbard West 57-44 the night before in Oak Park after shooting a lousy 23 percent from the field and scoring just a single basket in the second quarter.
The Huskies need to beat York this Thursday night to gain some momentum and get more insight into their first opponent for the playoffs. Yep, after closing out the season against York at home this Thursday night (7:30 p.m.), the Huskies will turn around and host the Dukes again on March 1 in the first round of the Oak Park Regional (8:10 p.m.).
The last time the two teams met, York’s Will Sullivan drained a 15-foot fade-away jumper in the closing seconds to hand the Huskies a 68-67 loss.
Do you think that shot will be on the minds of the Huskies this Thursday night? How about Tuesday, March 1?
Let’s just hope the memory of the two losses over the weekend doesn't linger too long. The team didn’t get President’s Day off today, and head coach Matt Maloney and assistant coach Al Allen were already busy reviewing film on York this morning.
