River Forest’s Dominican University will host a weeklong residency by members of the Drepung Loseling monastery beginning Feb. 15, which will include construction of a sand mandala, according to a statement from the school.
The construction of the mandala begins with a sketch on a five-foot round table before the design is filled in with colored sands. An opening ceremony for the project will be held at 2:45 p.m. Feb. 15 in the Rebecca Crown Library. The mandala will then be constructed from Feb. 16-18 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. A closing ceremony will be held Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. The opening, closing and construction are all free and open to the public.
A performance with singing and dancing, called “Sacred Music, Sacred Dance,” will be held Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lund Auditorium. Tickets for the show are $33, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Tibetan monasteries in the U.S. and India. For tickets and more information, call 708-488-5000 or visit dom.edu/pac.
