Oak Park police are urging residents to watch out for their cars, packages and purses during the holiday season.
Many vehicles are reported stolen during colder months, according to a statement sent Thursday from the village. Thefts, resulting from vehicles left running to warm up, can occur on a street, in a garage or during a quick stop at a store. Leaving a running vehicle unattended is also a violation of state law.
Police are also encouraging people not to leave packages or other valuables visible inside vehicles, even when they are locked. Make arrangements with friends or neighbors so any delivered packages will not be left out.
While out shopping or dining, the statement says, keep an eye on your purse, wallet and any other bags you're carrying. Bags hanging on the backs of chairs or sitting unattended in shopping carts are fair game for thieves.
To report any suspicious activity to police, call the non-emergency number at 708-386-3800.
