Did former OPRF High School student-athlete Jeff Dirkin have a hand in ending the NBA lockout?
The 6-foot-8 Dirkin starred for the OPRF boys basketball team two years ago. He’s currently a freshman at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., where several past and present Orlando Magic players had been working out during the NBA lockout. Last week, the Rollins College Tars took on a handful of those players at Warden Arena in an informal pick-up game. Dirkin’s team ended up coming away with a 101-92 victory against the pros, which were coached by the Magic’s Dwight Howard.
Current Magic players that participated in the game included Ryan Anderson and J.J. Reddick. Former Orlando players included Marcin Gortat, Courtney Lee and Jason Williams.
Perhaps Howard and his crew were so humiliated that it behooved them to try to somehow end the lockout? Not likely, but Dirkin and his teammates were granted an experience of a lifetime.
The former Huskie, who is only just beginning his collegiate hoops career after being red-shirted last season, is majoring in International Business with a minor in Japanese, a language he speaks fluently.
