The long-awaited first hearing on a controversial apartment building proposed for Madison Street is Thursday night.

The Oak Park Plan Commission will convene at 7 p.m. at village hall, 123 Madison, Thursday to hear a presentation from a Chicago-based developer looking to build a four-story apartment complex for low-income individuals. The proposed building is too tall, too dense and doesn’t provide enough parking under village codes, so Interfaith Housing Development Corp. is asking the commission for relief from local zoning rules.

Interfaith and village staff will give a presentation about the project tomorrow night, according to Village Planner Craig Failor. That will be followed by questions from the volunteer citizen panel. Residents won’t get their first chance to “cross examine” the developers until the next meeting, Jan. 6. Wednesday was the deadline to sign up for cross examination, and already five people have raised their hands, Failor said.

Commissioners tomorrow will figure out the exact schedule of things for the next three months. Already, meetings about the project are planned for Jan. 6 and 20, Feb. 3 and 17, and March 3.

Following are some links to previous stories that Wednesday Journal has written about the project. Check OakPark.com on Friday for coverage of the first plan commission meeting.
