Three District 97 elementary school teachers have been nominated for the 2010 Golden Apple Award. The nominees are: Cristina Arroyo, a kindergarten teacher at Irving School; and Lincoln teachers Marvin Childress, a first grade multiage teacher and Elizabeth Chase Vivas, a kindergarten teacher.

The Golden Apple Award recognizes exceptional Chicago area teachers. Instructors are nominated by one or more individuals. Winners are surprised in the classrooms in the spring. The award includes cash and prizes, also an opportunity to futher their education via sabbatical studies.

Previous Golden Apple winners for District 97 include retired P.E. teacher Sandy Noel (2006) and science teacher Seth Baker (2005).

I don't know the other nominees, but if they are in the same caliber as Marvin Childress, we are truly lucky to have such dedicated and talented teachers in our schools. A teacher who takes the time to understand each of their students and the differences in how they learn is extraordinary and definitely should be acknowledged.

Kudos to all three teachers! We are so fortunate at Lincoln to have Liz Chase-Vivas and Marvin Childress teaching our kids - they are incredible and truly care about the kids.

I know Liz Chase-Vivas. A sincere congratulations to her. She is a genuine caretaker and cares about kids education.
