After hosting a middle school forum for parents last week in River Forest, the anti-substance-abuse parent organization IMPACT has announced that a second forum will take place in Oak Park next month.
Julian Middle School, 416 S. Ridgeland, will host a parent café on Nov. 7. The focus is on middle-school parties where drinking and drug use might occur. Roosevelt Middle School in River Forest hosted a similar gathering on Oct. 19, sponsored by IMPACT and moderated by John Williams, director of Township Youth Services.
Melissa Ford, of Empowered Parenting Solutions, will attend the Julian event and take parents through a "case study" of an actual middle-school party. About 50 parents attended the Roosevelt event. The parent cafes are part of an overall campaign by parents to address substance abuse among high-schoolers and middle-schoolers in Oak Park and River Forest. The IMPACT group was formed by parents who spearheaded the substance-abuse awareness campaign in the two villages last year.
