While discussing the future of economic development in Oak Park on Monday, village officials brought up the idea of allowing straight-up bars here — no food, just booze.

Such establishments aren’t currently allowed, but Village Manager Tom Barwin and some trustees think that Oak Park should think twice about prohibiting pubs.

“Yes, yes, yes to a pub,” Trustee Ray Johnson said to a chorus of laughter. “I’ve been advocating for that for some time.”

“Across the street from village hall?” Barwin said.

“Across the street from my home maybe,” he responded.

Village President David Pope had an idea for a name: “We’ll call it Johnson’s Juice Joint,” he said to more laughs.

Oak Park officials also claim that they have heard interest in opening a microbrewery here, though no official proposals have been made.

Do you think there’s a place in Oak Park for a stand-alone saloon?

I have always wanted a pub around the corner of my house. It would be great to watch soccer matches and create a true pub scene as they are in Europe. Also, great way to get to know the neighbors better.

If someone wants to go into a place in Oak Park and just drink, he can do it at a number of places. I've done so numerous times at Phil's or B. Louis. I see no reason to think that a pub would attract some new breed of rifraff to OP.

Put the bar inside Village Hall. Plenty of free parking.

Bring on the booze! Economic times are changing and so should Oak Park. We need to attract a diverse array of businesses to Oak Park and relax some of the stick in the mud rules and regs to keep them here. Our taxes are high enough and our services are being cut all the time.

Open a pub. In the Comcast building. Give all the profits to District 97. Win. Win. WIN!

Bars in Oak Park? It will never happen because this town full of people that complain about everything and anything. Then the town will spend millions and millions of dollars on research to see if it's a good idea. If it is passed all the NIMBY's will start to cry about where the bars should go. Every issue in O.P. is a catch-22 cause everyone in O.P. complains

I think a craft brewery would be a great addition. A pub? Only if they have a top-notch beer selection, otherwise that niche is already taken with Poor Phils.

Micro brew pub is a great idea, and would only help keep people in OP for shopping. The Tax benefits are the good aspects of Economic Capability Developement

OP is too uptight to pull it off. Keep the bars in FP, where all the cool people go.
