The Interrupters, a critically acclaimed documentary produced by two Oak Parkers, makes its television debut on PBS tonight.

The film tells the story of three “violence interrupters” who work to protect Chicago communities from violence they were once part of, according to a press release from PBS. It has earned widespread critical praise and grabbed a Special Jury Award at the United Kingdom’s largest documentary festival, but was snubbed when Oscar nominations were announced last month.

It's produced by Oak Park resident Alex Kotlowitz, famous for penning the nonfiction book There are no Children Here, and directed by fellow Oak Parker Steve James (Hoop Dreams). The Interrupters airs from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday night on PBS.

It's wonderful that PBS is airing this amazing documentary, which tells a great story about people making a positive difference in their communities. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to see it, and thought it was superb in how it told the story.
