High school girls basketball update

OPRF pummels Fenton

The OPRF girls basketball team downed Fenton 59-41 to conclude the Fenton Tournament on Monday.

Stekara Hall led the onslaught for the Huskies with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Biz Mullins added 10 points, while Kayla Nelson pocketed six steals for the Huskies, who head into the week 9-14 overall.

OPRF will try to break the .500 mark in the West Suburban (Silver) Conference when it travels to York on Saturday. The Huskies head into the match-up 4-4 in conference play. 

Trinity hands Marist first loss

Taylor Nazon scored 12 of her 15 points in the second half and Megan Podkowa finished with 17 points to lead the Trinity basketball team to a 57-52 victory over Marist at the McDonald’s Shootout held at Willowbrook High School on Monday.

Nazon bucketed two three-pointers and Podkowa four free throws in the final period to help seal the victory over the third-ranked Redhawks (19-1). The DePaul-bound Podkowa also finished with nine rebounds.  

Trinity (19-1) travels to St. Joseph on Thursday and Vernon Hills on Saturday, before returning home to host Marian Catholic on Jan. 24 (7 p.m.). 

Fenwick falls hard to St. Louis team

A mostly banged up Fenwick girls basketball team suffered a 78-46 loss to St. Joseph of St. Louis at the McDonald’s Shootout on Monday.

The Friars (13-5), who were without reserve Mary Devereaux (broken wrist) and starter Marek Burchette (calf injury), finished with their lowest point total on the season. Maggie Reilly led Fenwick with 15 points, all coming from behind the three-point arc. Jade Owens added 13 points, and Paige Corvino 10, but the Friars had trouble defending a much taller St. Joseph team.

Six-foot-3 junior center Sydney Stipanovich led the Angels (16-2) with 31 points and 10 rebounds.         

The Friars remain on the road this week, traveling to Joliet Catholic on Wednesday and St. Viator on Saturday.
