Asking the property owners of Oak Park to agree to a 150 percent increase in their taxes for the park district is an excessive request and demonstrates a failure by the Park District Board to spread the burden to pay for this need.
The Park District of Oak Park needs an infusion of cash. If it were a suit of clothes the seat would be shiny with the cuffs a little frayed, and its owner would likely be looking to buy a replacement.
Since David Pope and Bob Milstein are both in the position if elected of nominating their successor to fill in the remaining two years of their terms as trustee, people who vote for them will be getting a "two fer." I hope they announce before the election who they would nominate, so we know what we are getting.
Please don't let the Oak Park Township Board elections slip off your radar screen. The township has a much smaller budget than the village or our schools (it takes up only about 3 percent of our tax bill), but it provides key social services for us and needs to have people with competence, experience and a good knowledge of Oak Park on its board who are willing to involve the community in vetting major decisions.
