James Eitrheim, 78, retired chairperson of Speech, Drama and Performing Arts at Oak Park and River Forest High School, died Saturday, April 16, 2011, at his home in Pequot Lakes, Minn. He died of stomach cancer, said Karin Eitrheim Maas, his daughter, a drama educator in Minneapolis.
Lorraine M. Miller, 87, longtime Oak Park resident, died at home on April 4, 2011. Born in Chicago on Nov. 14, 1923 to Russell and Neva Wadham, she was raised in Oak Park, graduating from Whittier Elementary School and Oak Park and River Forest High School.
Marcella "Marcy" Stumbaugh, 95, of Oak Park, died at home on March 26, 2011. Born on a farm in Oconto, Wis., she moved to Chicago in the 1930s. She met her husband while dancing at the Aragon Ballroom, and they raised their family on Chicago's North Side. Later in life, she lived at the Holley Court retirement community in Oak Park.
Harriet M. Freese, 84, of Oak Park, formerly of River Forest, died on April 3, 2011, at the Rainbow Hospice Ark in Park Ridge. Born on June 26, 1926, Harriet was the mother of Marnie (Robert) Rourke, Roseanne, Lloyd (Kathy) and Stephen (Kate), and the grandmother of Timothy Rourke, Sarah Rourke, Patrick Freese and the late Jonathan Freese.
Mary Catherine Hopkins, 96, a River Forest resident since 1946, died peacefully in her home on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 2011. Born on May 7, 1914 in Chicago, she was raised with her young uncles Patrick (an engineer on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad) and James (a boxer who as a child lost his ability to hear and speak as a result of encephalitis).
George Henry Bockwinkel III, 73, a longtime resident of River Forest, died at his home on March 17, 2011. Born on Dec. 19, 1937 in Chicago at Westside Hospital to George H. Jr. and Ruth (nee Rau) Bockwinkel, he was a graduate of Lincoln Elementary School in River Forest and a 1956 graduate of Oak Park and River Forest High School.
Betty Van Wyk, 71, died on Nov. 14, 2010 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. She was a reporter, township clerk, and a Zonta member. As an education beat reporter for many years with the Oak Leaves, she ran as an independent and was elected as a township trustee from 1981 to 1985, followed by a long tenure as township clerk through 1997.
Keith Cady, 96, died on March 9, 2011 with his lifelong sweetheart and wife of 73 years, Vicki, and his sons, Wendall and Paul, at his side. Born on March 15, 1914 in Brimfield, he attended Lake Forest College, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and its president his senior year.
Jean E. Guy, 90, died on Feb. 22, 2011 in Las Cruces, N.M. Born to James and Mary Eccles on March 22, 1920 in Oak Park, she graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School and the Harrington School of Interior Design in Chicago.
