Dorothy M. Boland, 88, a longtime Oak Park resident, died on March 11, 2011 at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital. Born on Nov. 22, 1922 in Brooklyn, N.Y., to David and Muriel Madders, she was raised in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
Leslie Anne Whitaker, 53, died on March 4, 2011 at Zilber Hospice in Wauwatosa, Wis. An accomplished author, journalist and teacher, she lived in Oak Park for 15 years before moving to Milwaukee in 2006.
Walter J. Bossard, 88, a longtime River Forest resident, died on March 2, 2011 at the Bethesda Home in Chicago. Born in Chicago on Feb. 2, 1923 to Walter and Emma Bossard and raised in Berwyn, he was a 1941 graduate of Morton High School in Cicero and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. A printer at Offset Press Company, he enjoyed photography.
Bruce Darrell Winstein, 67, of Oak Park, an experimental physicist who studied the afterglow of the universe's birth, died on Feb. 28, 2011 after a four-year battle with cancer. Born in Los Angeles on Sept. 25, 1943, he attended UCLA before earning his doctorate in physics at the California Institute of Technology in 1970.
Marty Grimes, 42, formerly of Oak Park, died on Feb. 28, 2011. Born and raised in Oak Park, he graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School in 1987 and worked at the Chicago Board of Trade for 25 years as a bond trader, the youngest member ever to obtain a seat.
Helen M. Dowling, 100, of River Forest died on Feb. 26, 2011 at her home. Born on Nov. 23, 1910 to Margaret and Patrick McCarthy in Chicago, she married Robert E. Dowling, an attorney, real estate investor, and decorated WWII Lt. Commander with the U.S. Navy, and together they had seven children.
Norman Roth, 94, formerly of Oak Park, died peacefully in his sleep in California on Feb. 22, 2011. Born in 1917 on Chicago's West Side, his support for the labor movement began early — at 14, he picketed in support of striking teachers.
Lucille M. Beaulieu, 96, a longtime resident of Oak Park, died at her home on Feb. 26, 2011. Born on Jan. 5, 1915 in Chicago to Leslie and Mary McColloste, she was raised in Crystal Lake. After high school graduation, her family moved to Maywood.
Anne L. Updegrove of Oak Park died on Feb. 16, 2011 from a malignant brain tumor. She received her B.A. in psychology from Cornell University in 1979 and her PhD in clinical psychology in 1988 from Virginia Commonwealth University.
