Oak Park and River Forest High School will transition to a new lock system for the school's gym lockers by Friday after it was discovered last week that a student was in possession of a copy of a master key that provides access to current gym locks, according to an Oct. 14 letter from school officials.
Tempers flared Wednesday night as an audience of about 40 opponents and supporters of carrying concealed handguns squared off at a town hall meeting at Oak Park Village Hall, hosted by state Rep. La Shawn Ford (D-8th).
Crime continues to drop in Oak Park. For the first nine months of this year, crime is down by 16 percent over the same period a year earlier. That was the report Monday evening from Police Chief Rick Tanksley when he spoke at a community forum on crime and safety at village hall.
State Rep. La Shawn Ford (D-Chicago) has introduced a bill in the General Assembly to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana. Last week Ford, who represents both Oak Park and Austin, hosted a forum for more than 50 people about the bill at Oak Park's village hall.
