George M. Shutes, 91, of St. Charles, formerly a longtime resident of River Forest, died on Nov. 1, 2012. Born on Nov. 30, 1920 in Oakland, Calif., to Milton and Helen McKillip Shutes, he was raised in Piedmont, Calif., and joined the Air Force after his college years at the University of California Berkley and Davis campuses.
James R. Moore, 63, a former Oak Park resident, died on Oct. 17, 2012 at Oscar Johnson V.A. Hospital in Iron Mountain, Mich. He attended St. Edmund School, graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School, and was a Vietnam War veteran.
Karen Lynn Mitterer, 40, died on Sept. 22, 2012. Born on Sept. 10, 1972 in Hinsdale, she attended and graduated from Grace Lutheran School and Oak Park and River Forest High School. After completing her Bachelor of Arts in English from Smith College, she went on to pursue a law degree from Chicago Kent School of Law.
June Mahoney Noonan, 94, died on Oct. 23, 2012 at Loyola Hospital. Born on March 8, 1918, her church affiliations, which gave her peace and hope, were enhanced by fellowship with amazing people who felt blessed by her presence in return.
Norman Adelman, 82, died peacefully on Oct. 15, 2012 in Oak Park. He was the executive director of the Children's Outing Association (COA Youth and Family Centers). Born on July 16, 1930, he and his wife moved to Milwaukee from Brooklyn, New York to work with the Milwaukee Jewish Community Center and in November 1958 he was hired as executive director of COA, where he served until his retirement in 1990.
Barbara Winchester Swords, 87, died at home in Elmhurst, surrounded by family and friends, on Oct. 23, 2012. Born on Feb. 1, 1925 in Chicago, she graduated from the University of Chicago in 1947 and taught in the English Department at Elmhurst College from 1960-1989 until her retirement.
Carol Lydecker Dwyer, 57, of Forest Park, formerly of Oak Park, died on Oct. 2, 2012 after battling cancer for more than two years. She was a dancer, choreographer, community theater actress and administrative manager for the Urban Innovations property management company.
David L. Kusinitz, 59, of Oak Park died on Oct. 9, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. After earning bachelor's degrees in government and history from Clark University, he continued his education at the University of Chicago where he received a master's degree in political science.
