Self-proclaimed independent newcomer Russell Nummer and incumbent village trustees Patrick O'Brien and Nancy Dillon won seats on the River Forest village board Tuesday. O'Brien, a six-year board veteran, led the vote totals with 1,150, followed by 4-term incumbent Dillon with 1,070. Nummer appeared to edge fellow challenger James Winikates 1,050 to 1,019, the unofficial vote total as of 9:30 p.m.

A well known and sometimes controversial name in local sporting goods retailing may be returning to the Oak Park and River Forest area, though in a markedly different form. Mark Breit, owner of Breit & Johnson Sporting Goods in Elmwood Park, which did business on North Avenue in Oak Park for decades, is reportedly in negotiations to purchase a long-undeveloped River Forest parcel at the corner of Franklin Street and Madison.
A devastating early morning house fire in the 100 block of South Harvey Ave. claimed the life of an elderly Oak Park woman Saturday. Virginia Cameron, 76, reportedly lived on the second floor of the large 2-story home at 121 S. Harvey Ave., and shared the home with her daughter, who occupied the first floor.
