A well known and sometimes controversial name in local sporting goods retailing may be returning to the Oak Park and River Forest area, though in a markedly different form. Mark Breit, owner of Breit & Johnson Sporting Goods in Elmwood Park, which did business on North Avenue in Oak Park for decades, is reportedly in negotiations to purchase a long-undeveloped River Forest parcel at the corner of Franklin Street and Madison.
A devastating early morning house fire in the 100 block of South Harvey Ave. claimed the life of an elderly Oak Park woman Saturday. Virginia Cameron, 76, reportedly lived on the second floor of the large 2-story home at 121 S. Harvey Ave., and shared the home with her daughter, who occupied the first floor.
Oak Park resident David A. Hoffman, 68, is being held in the DuPage County Jail on $1 million bond in connection with an alleged $500,000 scam involving his 94-year-old mother. According to DuPage County State's Attorney Joseph Birkett's office, Oak Brook police were contacted in October 2003 by concerned relatives of the victim, Oak Brook resident Angela Hoffman.
