The family of Patricia Quane, the 52-year-old bicyclist and teacher killed by a Metra express train Aug. 23 in Riverside, filed a lawsuit Sept. 28 in the Circuit Court of Cook County against Metra and the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad.
Parent advocacy group APPLE held its first annual Parental Empowerment Workshop Oct. 4 at Oak Park and River Forest High School. The group (African-American Parents for Purposeful Learning in Education) organized the workshop to help parents deal with a range of issues concerning their kids, from disciplinary problems to communication.
The idea to enact a development moratorium in Oak Park fell flat last week before the village board, seeming to have been taken more seriously by business and property owners than by trustees who first included it on a list of talking points.
A new police oriented website, http://opzone4.blogspot.com/, is showing the promise of technology helping police and citizens communicate with each other more easily and efficiently. "Welcome to the Oak Park Zone 4 Blog," the new site reads. "This is a neighbor-run site for residents of Oak Park's Zone 4." That zone encompasses an area bordered by Austin Boulevard, Madison Street, Oak Park Avenue and South Boulevard.
River Forest The River Forest Development Review Board voted 5-0 last Thursday night to recommend approval of Dominican University's $45 million campus improvement plan to the village board. The recommendation is a key step toward the university receiving a final OK for the construction of a new academic building, 550-car parking garage and a new driveway connecting that garage to Thatcher Avenue.
The Park District of Oak Park is moving from broad focus to narrow as it begins consideration of what to do with Carroll Park, the green space and fieldhouse adjacent to Lincoln School at Kenilworth and Fillmore.
