A lot of funerals pass through St. Edmund Church, but none quite like the one celebrated last Saturday morning at 8:30 Mass. Roughly 30 parishioners came to mark the passing of Steve Kiraly, 91, a longtime usher at this very Mass.
Mary Ellen Massura (nee Stafford), 88, of Oak Park died on Oct. 19, 2013 in the family home. Born on Oct. 11, 1925 in Lafayette, Ind., she was the eldest twin child of John William and Cora (Sauer) Stafford. She attended St. Mary School through fifth grade. The family moved briefly to Lakewood, Ohio, before settling in Oak Park in 1939, where she resided until her death.
Thomas Charles Nelson, 63, of Charlotte, N.C. and formerly of Oak Park, died on Oct. 29, 2013. Born on April 13, 1950 in Chicago, he spent his youth in Oak Park, graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School in 1967, and then from Bradley University in 1972 before beginning a long career in the construction industry.
Alice Louise Mah-alek (nee Anderson), 88, of Oak Park and Terre Haute, Indiana, died Oct. 10, 2013 surrounded by her family. Born in Boone, Iowa on Oct. 24, 1924, she attended various schools in the Mid-west, graduating from Mount Saint Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas.
Raymond J. "Ray" Brennock, 84, of Oak Park, died on Oct. 25, 2013. Born on Aug. 21, 1929, he was a 1947 graduate of Oak Park and River Forest High School and a 1951 graduate of Loyola University in Chicago. Ray served with the U.S. Army in Korea and, after the war, received his Masters Degree in Business from Chicago's DePaul University.
Martin J. Paul, 84, of Torrance, California and formerly Oak Park, died on Sept. 30, 2013 peacefully at home after a five and a half year battle with pancreatic cancer while surrounded by his loving family. Born in Oak Park on Sept. 4, 1929 to Mary and Joseph Paul, he grew up in Forest Park and attended Proviso Township High School.
Howard Lewis Mayhew, 80, who lived in Oak Park for 47 years, died on Oct. 25, 2013 at Elmhurst Hospital. Born on Sept. 30, 1933 in Murphysboro to the late Harry and Vera Mayhew, he was raised in Havana, Illinois and graduated from Havana High School.
