Want to make a statement? Well, there's nothing like a big round number to do it. And indications are that the school board at Oak Park and River Forest High School is in the statement-making business.
There is a brand new pawn shop on North Avenue. That's the fifth along a short strip of North Avenue. We agree with neighbors — it sends a clear signal that this is a retail area in great distress. Last week a court ruled against the neighbors' lawsuit trying to block the already opened E-Z Pawn store.
I appreciate the letters from the Gun Responsibilities Subcommittee members in last week's Viewpoints. These letters demonstrate another of the many things I learned from the Gun Rights and Responsibilities Committee meetings — that every one of us had false assumptions and misunderstandings about the other side.
On Dec. 4, seven members of the ad hoc Gun Rights and Responsibilities Committee (GRRC), identifying themselves as the Gun Responsibilities (as opposed to the Gun Rights) side of that committee, published a position statement in the Viewpoints section of Wednesday Journal, the core of which contained a small number of significant recommendations for reducing gun violence in this country. I am one of those seven people.
Alan Peres contends that Israel does not focus excessively on its own security [Israel's concern for security is justified, Viewpoints, Nov. 20] and that suicide bombings and rocket fire from the Gaza Strip justify Israel's border wall as a self-defense measure.
This letter is directed to the family who gave my lost dog, Patty, food and shelter during these freezing days. Patty was probably frightened by the crowds of people and cars in the River Forest Town Center at Lake Street and Harlem Avenue when I parked there on Saturday, Dec. 7.
Right-hand side ramps at Austin and Harlem are the biggest concern for people who submitted comments to IDOT. They move the source of air and noise pollution closer to where people live, upsetting families with young children and people with respiratory problems.
