Burglars take $2,300 from safe at North Avenue restaurant

Burglars pried open a rear door of JJ Fish, 6317 North Ave. overnight on Aug. 30. Once inside they broke through a wall and into the restaurant, entered the safe and cash register and took $2,310. They also damaged a surveillance camera. Total loss and damage was $4,910.

"This was a much more sophisticated burglary than the burglaries we usually deal with," said Oak Park Deputy Chief Robert Scianna. "It took some time and effort and some planning."


? A thin man in his 20's with braided hair approached a woman walking in the 300 block of North Ridgeland from behind the morning of Aug. 30. The man grabbed the woman's purse, breaking the shoulder strap. Loss was $45.

? A woman riding her bike in the 300 block of North Kenilworth the afternoon of Aug. 30 had her canvas bag, containing a DVD and audiocassette, snatched off her shoulder by another woman.

Domestic battery

? Deandre Pittard, 19, approached a woman sitting in her car in the 00 block of Madison around 4 a.m. Sept. 1. Pittard allegedly reached in and grabbed the woman by the throat and choked her.

? A juvenile female Oak Park resident was arrested the morning of Sept. 1 after striking a woman, then pushing her.

? Emmeille D. Young was arrested the afternoon of Aug. 31 after being identified by a woman as the person who allegedly choked her with her hands.

Burglary to auto

? A 2005 Ford Explorer parked behind 715 Lake St. had a passenger window broken out the night of Aug. 31, and a laptop computer stolen. Loss and damage totaled $1,200.

? Someone entered a 1992 Buick Century parked in the 600 block of Madison through a damaged open window on Aug. 30. Six CDs were stolen as well as a Chicago city vehicle sticker.

? Five CDs and $15 cash were stolen from an unlocked 2003 Honda Odyssey in the 1100 block of Clarence overnight on Aug. 29.

? Someone entered an unlocked 2002 Toyota 4-Runner at Harrison Street and Austin Blvd. the morning of Aug. 29 and stole a dress police hat with a Cook County Sheriff's badge attached.

? Someone broke the side window of a Ford Escort Aug. 31 and stole $1 in change. The damage loss was $250.

? Someone smashed a side window of a 2000 BMW X5 parked at Dominican University the afternoon of Aug. 29. A purse containing $100 cash, a check book, and several credit cards was stolen. The thieves attempted to use the credit cards five times shortly afterward.

? Someone broke the passenger window of a VW Passat in the 300 block of Chicago Avenue, River Forest, the morning of Sept. 1 and stole a bag containing $50.

Criminal trespass

Jesse C. Williams, 38, of Chicago was arrested the night of Aug. 30 in the Jewel store, 438 Madison, after being warned not to return to the premises. He was also allegedly found in possession of a 5-inch pipe.

Retail theft

? Dwayne Smith, 45, was arrested for felony retail theft after allegedly taking 12 packages of meat from the Jewel store, 7525 Lake St., without paying. The charges were upgraded due to previous convictions.

? Ezra E. Mathis, 25, of Chicago was arrested after being positively identified as the person who allegedly stuffed numerous DVDs down his pants at the CVS Pharmacy, 345 Madison, the afternoon of Aug. 29 and left the store without paying.

? Robert Forrest, 52, of 3415 W. Adams, Chicago, was arrested the night of Sept. 1 after allegedly walking out of the same CVS Pharmacy without paying for merchandise in his possession. He was also charged with criminal trespass after having been warned previously not to return to the store.

? Victor Wilkens, 46, was charged with felony retail theft after allegedly attempting to steal items from the Coconuts, 7235 Lake St.


? For the second time in a week, someone has stolen bushes from the Fresh Store, 6209 W. North Ave. Overnight on Aug. 30 six bushes valued at $1,080 were stolen.

? Someone stole a purse containing credit cards, papers and $100 cash from an unsecured office at 425 N. Harlem the afternoon of Aug. 30.

Criminal damage to property

? Someone damaged a window at Percy Julian school, 416 S, Ridgeland, with a BB overnight on Aug. 31. Damage was $500.

? A resident of the 600 block of Edgewood reported hearing what sounded like breaking wood and an air rifle report around 11:50 p.m. Aug. 31. When he looked out his rear living room window, there were two small holes in the storm window.

Bike theft

A Chicago juvenile was arrested Aug. 31 after being positively identified as the person who took a bike from an Oak Park juvenile by force.Other bikes stolen last week: two on Aug. 27-29, in the 00 block of LeMoyne, worth $1,000; on Aug 29 in the 300 block of North Cuyler, worth $300; in the 300 block of South Elmwood, worth $300; in the 800 block of North Scoville, worth $150; on Aug. 30, in the 400 block of North Harvey, worth $60; in the 1200 block of North Lombard, worth $105, and in the 600 block of Van Buren, worth $125.

? These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Oak Park and River Forest Police departments from August 28 to Sept. 2. Not all incidents that occurred are listed. Anyone named in reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated.
