Fourteen Oak Park Republicans, straight and true, turned out in a public place — Bar Louie's — last week to watch Mitt Romney, their presidential candidate, accept the party's nomination in Tampa.
Why is this news? Well as Linda Tibensky, chair of the local GOP, candidly acknowledged, it is tough to find self-declaring Republicans in Oak Park. She says she has maybe 50 on her roster of active local Republicans. In a burg where Barack Obama brought in 80+ percent of the vote in 2008, it is not easy being a Republican.
Now we're not going all Romney-Ryan on you, but we admire thoughtful people of declared political beliefs. We'd like to encourage a more vigorous local Republican party. A good discussion is good for everybody.
