Parks could serve as hosts for block parties

For 17 years my family has lived on a busier street in Oak Park. The people on those blocks are not able to shut down traffic and get out in the street for a party. In fact, when my children went to a block party on the next block where their friend lived, they were told they did not belong there because their address was not on that block, and they came home. Now grown, they are still annoyed by the taking over of public property by the adjoining properties for a party to the exclusion of other residents nearby.

Last week Barrie Park reopened and the festivities were well planned and inclusive of all the residents in the area. Businesses in the area funded activities, and it was a great party for the neighborhood.

I would like the residents and Oak Park officials to consider using the neighborhood parks for a summer party instead of the many exclusive block parties. They would be better organized and more fun for all the residents' children in the neighborhood.
